MOTHER/ROAD

MOTHER/ROAD is a multimedia musical meditation on grief, memory, family, and borders using the cassette tapes my parents brought when they immigrated to this country as keys to other dimensions. Examining that journey from Istanbul to the U.S. as the nexus between past and future generations, this piece seeks to dissect what things we carry with us; what fragments of identity we barely remember; and the weight of what is left behind. Inspired by the work of Laurie Anderson, William Basinksi, Phillip Glass, Gabriel Kahane, Mona Pirnot, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, to name a few, MOTHER/ROAD is non-linear and avoids “traditional” narrative. Instead, it attempts to capture the feeling of an emotional “swarm." The intimate & the epic; the personal & the universal; stasis & change - all contained in a note or gesture, evolving through time, air, & ears and into the cells of our body. And hopefully, it’ll be a way for our daughter to sing with her ancestors.

In-process excerpts from MOTHER/ROAD. This work will ultimately be experienced immersively, surrounding the listener rather than presented in a traditional proscenium setting. In this video, you’ll hear and see examples of what I call “sonic memory collisions.” These elements overlap and echo across generations—fragments of memory, sound, and identity in conversation with each other.
